Nike is already changing the future of women’s footwear with its Unlaced initiative, and according to Business Insider, women are now choosing sneakers over heels, as sales of high heels have declined dramatically.

Online resale platform ThredUp, recently released data that showed the company had seen a 38% increase in "heel purges" in the last three months, while sneaker sales were up 46% in the same period.

Erin Wallace, brand director at ThredUp, wrote in a blog post, "Our data demonstrates that athleisure is certainly a prevailing trend as women seek out more casual, comfortable footwear."

A recent report by NDP Group’s sports industry analyst Matt Powell, also revealed that sport lifestyle, specifically athletic footwear, continued to grow for Nike and adidas, as well as skate improving by more than forty percent, all thanks to the athleisure trend driving those categories.

In addition, NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service revealed that sales of high heels declined by 11% in the United States in 2017, while women's sneaker sales went up 37% in the same period.

Furthermore, The New York Times speculates that the decline in sales of high heels may be linked to the #MeToo era and reports of sexual harassment, as women are now choosing to dress for themselves, rather than being sexually appealing to men.
