While A$AP Rocky may not be the most elusive of celebrities, he certainly is not known as being the most present in the public eye. Which is why it came as something of a surprise to find the rapper conducting a marathon 450-minute interview on radio show The Breakfast Club. But it wasn’t all fun and games, as Rocky took the time to address the ongoing controversy concerning his stance on the Black Lives Matter movement.
It all started last week when an interview Rocky gave with Time Out New York last fall was unearthed on Twitter. Multiple users were quick to find a rather damning quote concerning his views on the social movement, in which he shirked any responsibility he may have for what they stand for. The print interview quotes him as saying “What the fuck am I, Al Sharpton now? I’m A$AP Rocky. I did not sign up to be no political activist.”
Many were incensed, but Rocky clarifies in detail his intentions and beliefs with the hosts of The Breakfast Club. While apologetic to those he has offended, he insists that many interview situations result in misquoting and paraphrasing. That said, he engages in a spirited discourse about the myriad of problems facing Black America today, and how much one's community can hinder one's viewpoint.
