Editor’s Notes: The ongoing collaboration between Japan’s Hender Scheme and Germany’s adidas continues with the second drop of a trio of classic silhouettes that we had previously seen in Hender’s signature natural leather colorway. This time, each of the sneakers is dressed up to look like the retail adidas versions (black upper with blue and red plugs on the NMD_R1 for example).

Hender Scheme founder and designer Ryo Kashiwazaki explains “For these styles you can see, we applied the original colorways of the original shoes, and we paid more attention to the material and the tanning technique to apply this color. We challenged the Japanese tanneries with this sort of color application, and it was really interesting what came out. We also challenged adidas, using this type of leather that ages over time is something that adidas wouldn’t use themselves, and creating leather shoes in general is not something they do usually. So, I can imagine that for adidas it was quite challenging for them.”

While the price point is still quite high compared to in-line adidas sneakers, Ryo-san makes it clear that quality is his main priority. “Quality comes first, I’m not considering mass production. We consider how to maintain the quality.”

Erman Aykurt, Senior Design Director Originals, added on by saying, “It might not seem like such a big progress from the previous season, but there’s a lot of work that goes on in the background, and so aligning the two approaches to product creation.”

Available via an official raffle, the sneakers will be shipped out on March 16.
