What We’re Saying: Grey Day is New Balance’s fictional sneaker holiday dedicated to celebrating the brand’s heritage. It’s also a great excuse for the brand to release classic silhouettes in shades of New Balance’s famous grey. This year, the sportswear company is dropping a collection comprising the 574 in two versions, one with the “N” branding and one without (as is customary on Grey Day), as well as the more modern take on the silhouette, the chunkier 57/40.

The 574 was originally released in the ’80s and has since become one of the brand’s most popular silhouettes. It was initially designed to combine road and trail-running characteristics for a “go anywhere” shoe. As is often the case with popular sneakers, the 574 quickly became a lifestyle favorite and is now primarily worn due to its versatility and classic design.

As part of its Grey Day celebrations this year, New Balance has tapped five UK-based creatives — Cktrl, Lauren Ralph, Meme Gold, Wheelman, and Sumuyya Khader — to star in its campaign. The creatives hail from London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Liverpool and all work across music, fashion design, and visual art. In addition to being featured in the campaign imagery, the five creatives will be making radio appearances to discuss their passion and their work.

Look for the “Grey Day” collection to drop on May 15 at select retailers.
