Rihanna’s “Work” is one of the pinnacles of the year in culture, regardless of the fact that the year is hardly over yet. Her dancehall-infused duet with Drake is among the most catchy, fun and, ultimately, inescapable songs in recent memory. It's like Pokémon Go in a four-minute song form. Naturally, this means that many are going to try their hand at remixing the track. But few would dare to remix it in such a way to make it nearly unrecognizable, but that’s precisely what Knxwledge has done in this just-dropped remix video.
Knxwledge is a producer who is still on the come-up, but he is perhaps more well-known under the name NxWorries, a duo that he forms half of together with one of this year’s breakout hip-hop stars, Anderson .Paak. With .Paak, he showed an immense talent for creating unique and often unidentifiable soundscapes.
This is on full display in his remix of “Work,” which leaves Rihanna and Drake’s vocals untouched, but utterly transforms the instrumentation into an entirely different song. Guitars, bass and synthesizers create a version of “Work” that is unparalleled, either in other remixes of the track or even other Rihanna songs.
In related news, Rihanna stopped by for a phenomenal performance with Drake at OVO Fest this weekend.
