Editor’s Notes: Nike is gearing up to release a lifestyle version of its record-breaking Zoom Alphafly NEXT% runner. Officially called the Air Zoom Type, the sneaker is designed to alleviate stress on the body and feet during a full day of wear.

The Air Zoom Type was conceived from an early prototype of the Alphafly NEXT%. "We took the original prototype, scanned it and then reverse-engineered it for daily wear," said Lee Gibson, Nike Design Lead. "For example, the TPU plate provides some of the modulation of the Alphafly carbon plate, but doesn't give as aggressive of a rocking sensation."

As the brand points out, there is visual continuity between the Air Zoom Type and the Alphafly NEXT%, as the former is meant to mirror the hand-built Alphafly prototype as much as possible.

"Rather than just repackage an aesthetic, I felt it was authentic to create a true connection to the innovation story," Gibson added. "We achieve that by drafting off the initial concept and idea, ultimately delivering a really raw, visceral version of the performance runner."
