Highsnobiety

Street Style is a photo series documenting the latest happenings and goings-on in the Highsnobiety universe. Here, Eva Al Desnudo shoots a selection of the best trench coats we've seen this season.

The biannual fashion week circuit provides the perfect time to cast an eye to the streets to take a glimpse the prevailing trends of the moment. We have noticed the classic trench coat popping up outside fashion shows everywhere in recent weeks, in a wide array of tones, textures, and silhouettes.

The jacket's recent resurgence could be traced to Burberry, who brought back their iconic nova check print last season. Burberry — who claim to be the trench's originators — often feature the prints on their trenches, as you can see via some of the looks below.

See below for a selection of looks from Milan Fashion Week, which offer some expert tips on how to style the piece this season.

A perfect example of how to combine oversized proportions on the top and bottom. This long blue trench beautifully compliments the wearer's wide-legged pants underneath.

Rocking a trench over a turtleneck is a timeless look. Here, the wearer has paired their beige trench with a matching beige sweater — the tonal layering takes this tasteful 'fit to another level.

Street style mainstay Gilda Ambrosia layers a classic nova check trench over Burberry track pants, sport socks and heels. Not for beginners.

Proof that trench coats don't need to be beige (or opaque, for that matter).

Another example of tonal matching, this time featuring Gosha Rubchinskiy’s recent Burberry collab. This minimalist palette provides the perfect canvas for a pair of statement sneakers to shine.

This understated navy piece provides more proof that your trench doesn't have to be beige. Bonus points go for layering it over rugged denim overalls.

A more colorful take on the leather trenches that looked so banging in 'The Matrix.'

This jacket's super-oversized silhouette is kept under control by the belt cinching it at the waist. Very chic.
