The UCLA Bruins basketball team were given a surprise on Monday morning when they found Kanye West and 2 Chainz shooting some hoops on campus.
According to reports, 'Ye and Chainz were playing with friends in the Wooden Center when the Bruins walked in for a scheduled workout. Respectfully, the players kept their distance as the group played. When they were finished, the pair then joined them for some chit-chat and photo opportunities.
It's a nice story, sure, but more interesting (at least to us) was the footwear Kanye had on his feet. Last year, rumors surfaced suggesting that the YEEZY line was gearing up to release several performance-based silhouettes, with a basketball sneaker thought to be one of the main projects. Could the mid-top model worn on the day by Kanye (below) be our first sighting of said basketball sneaker?
The kick bears similarities to the color-blocked YEEZY Runner which leaked back in February. Sporting a blue upper with grey accents, the sneaker's complex lacing system and weighty midsole bear the hallmarks of a basketball model.
It wouldn't be the first time Kanye has put potential new footwear through a rigorous court test. In 2014, he was spotted hoopin' while wearing the adidas Pure Boost, a shoe which, of course, would go on to heavily influence the YEEZY Boost 750. These, however, would be something else entirely in terms of hype. Already, names including Nick Young, James Harden and Derrick Rose have expressed interest in working with Kanye on signature models.
Might Yeezy be about to jump over the Jumpman for real? We'll need to wait and see.
Stay posted for further information. In the meantime, here are all 150 pieces from YEEZY season 5.
