Editor’s Notes: Los Angeles Angels all-start outfielder Mike Trout is currently injured, but Nike has just released his latest signature baseball cleat with the Zoom Trout 4.
Meticulously crafted to suit Trout and baseball athletes, Nike designers’ knowledge around baseball player movements and Mike Trout’s captured data generated the cleat’s profile through computational design. “Using Trout’s foot scans, movements and pressure maps allows us to go in and precisely tune the stiffness, flexibility and structures for performance,” explains Roger Chen, Sr. Director, NXT Digital Innovation – Advanced Design.
For example, the hexagonal structures were compressed in areas requiring stiffness and were relaxed in areas requiring flexibility, and hexagonal Zoom Air units were placed strategically to distribute pressure as well as provide comfort.
The rest of the cleat’s composition is defined by a 5/8-height waterfall collar that features foam wraps over the top of the collar for extra cushioning, while the gusseted tongue helps block dirt. Additionally, the skin overlay at the toe adds durability and the foam wing at the midsole provides stability.
Introduced in a “Mahi Mahi” colorway that extends a legacy of fish-inspired Trout cleats, the model is also available in turf form, which you can find at Nike retailers and online now.
Also, Nike’s Classic Cortez receives a fully modern makeover.
