Born in 1998, the Air Max Plus almost immediately became a favorite among street subcultures all across Europe. As it generated its cult-like following, the sneaker took on many different identities and nicknames; "TNs" in Great Britain, "El Tiburon" in Spain, "Le Requin" in France. The first of those three makes sense, given the shoe's "Tuned" moniker and "TN" branding at the tongue and heel. The second two, however, both translate to "The Shark."

The nickname apparently stems from the original “Hyper Blue” colorway, with its gradient-colored upper reminiscent of a shark skin's unique texture. Now, nearly two decades later, the Air Max Plus is back in shark-infested waters with a modern reinterpretation of the original "Hyper Blue" — only this time the shark theme is intentional.

Fittingly named "Le Requin," the shoe's construction of colors and sublimated graphics are directly inspired by the apex predator, with a unique graphic seen throughout the upper emulating a water shadow over a shark’s body. Meanwhile, the white gradient running below mimics a shark’s belly.

The NikeLab Air Max Plus "Le Requin" is slated for release on November 23 for a price of $175.
