Editor’s Notes: Finally, after months of speculation, Virgil Abloh and Nike have unveiled the crown piece of their World Cup collaboration: the Zoom Fly Mercurial Flyknit. And, instead of dropping just one pair, Abloh and Nike have teamed up on two versions of the same shoe: one in black with white and blue detailing, and the other in an eye-catching orange with white and blue detailing.

In designing these two street-ready sneakers, Abloh has stayed true to his original design for the on-pitch Nike Mercurial Vapor 360, which featured the same “strike zone” polka dots, ushering in what is shaping up to be the most stylish World Cup in history.

On his rendition of the Mercurial, Abloh said, “I wanted to communicate where a player strikes the ball. So I put dots on the boot. If you’re going to strike the ball, your foot-eye coordination is basically the only variance of chance.

“That’s what the collection started with, these running shoes that mimic the same as your actual boot on the pitch, so that you started subconsciously training all the time. Then I just applied that aesthetic from the bottom up.”
