As Nike continues to unveil new products for their coinciding athletes leading up to this summer’s Rio Olympics, here we get a look at some new eyewear that the brand has whipped up for track and field competitors.

The Swoosh in turn looked to nature, taking inspiration from the lightweight, flexible strength and structure of tendons, in addition to conducting extensive design studies to come up with the Nike Wing. The Wing is a single-body curved sun shield that extends the traditional lens to eliminate hinges, all while incorporating fractal cuts and a peaked middle “speed crease” to enhance aerodynamic flow.

To make all of this possible, as an entirely new material mix and method of creation was required, Nike looked to VSP Global’s eyewear design and innovation lab, The Shop, and optical lens specialist ZEISS. The group came together to perfect the Wing design, which all in all, took roughly 20 months to accomplish. In addition to the aforementioned components, the glasses also include an adaptable silicone nosepiece and back band for a comfortable, secure, moisture-resistant fit, alongside a ventilated silicone brow-bar that allows for maximum airflow, to reduce fogging.

Nike Wing weighs four grams less than an average piece of eyewear and touches the face and head in fewer places. In rounding out the design, the lens surface features Nike’s Speed Tint to reduce glare while allowing all red light, which has a calming effect on the body, to enter the eye.

Nike Wing is scheduled to drop on Nike.com on August 5.
