Model: Shox Enigma
Key Features: Though an all-new Shox model, the Enigma features a clearly retro-influenced design with a big-hole mesh base and synthetic overlays at the toe box, heel, and sides of the sneaker. Iridescent detailing and pops of either orange or neon green provide eye-catching details that rival the head-turning four-pillar cushioning at the heel.
Release Date: August 29
Buy: Nike and select retailers (see list below)
Editor’s Notes: The Nike Shox Enigma is an all-new, Shox-equipped model that brings Nike’s early ’00s cushioning technology firmly into the present. Its retro-influenced upper goes well with the brutalist Shox cushioning underfoot and is part of a larger Shox relaunch this year by the Swoosh. Along with the R4, BB4 and TL, the Enigma is the fourth Shox style to see a wider release in 2019.
Shox was originally imagined by legendary designer Bruce Kilgore (who also birthed the Air Force 1) in the early to mid ’80s. The technology lay dormant for almost 20 years before it made its debut in the early ’00s. Unfortunately, it was quickly phased out when Nike Free was developed and released. Originally a performance running technology, Shox has now come back as a purely lifestyle model.
