Editor’s Notes: When it comes to collaborations, Carhartt WIP has never been one to shy away. Following recent collabs with Sun Buddies and Stüssy, the streetwear brand has now partnered up with the late Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.
To honor the legendary musician and his legacy, Carhartt WIP has dropped a special collection — the brand’s biggest musical collaboration to date. For the uninitiated, Fela Kuti was a Nigerian-born jazz and funk musician who, by all accounts, is considered to be the father of Afrobeat music.
Carhartt WIP’s Fela Kuti collection includes vibrant shirts, shorts, and hats, as well as graphic tees paying homage to the musician’s legacy which includes quotes such as “Drugs are not allowed in the Shrine” — a sign from Fela Kuti’s famous nightclub in Lagos, Nigeria; the New Afrika Shrine.
But the collection is not simply limited apparel and accessories — you’ll also find a limited-edition vinyl reissue of Kuti’s Live In Detroit 1986.
To support the drop, Carhartt WIP has also linked up with Dazed and NTS Radio to release a special film directed by Nigerian film-maker Akinola Davies Jr (aka Crack Stevens), titled One Day Go Be One Day. While the Carhartt WIP x Fela Kuti collaboration dropped in-store and online on April 4, it has now landed at select retailers such as Caliroots.
