Editor’s Notes: Nike continues its sneaker mashups with this hybridized version of its talisman "Silver Bullet" Air Max 97. Originally rumored to release in late March, we have an official release date thanks to Berlin-based retailer Overkill.

It its Instagram post (below), Overkill confirmed the sneaker will release on March 30. Other retailers, like fellow Berlin store Voo, are releasing the sneaker on March 31.

This Silver Bullet Air VaporMax marks an important time in Nike sneaker history, as one of its most iconic designs meets its most revolutionary Air unit sole.

Just how much work went into crafting the new sole unit is explained in full here. The VaporMax sole mold is composed of over 39,000 components, making it more complicated than a high-powered car engine. It took approximately 15 tries to get the shoe perfect, since the material is fused directly to the Air bag.

Christian Tresser, the man who originally designed the Air Max 97 spoke briefly about his inspirations and how the cult silhouette came to be: “Being an avid competitive cyclist, I had my eye on the mountain bike world. In that exact moment, it seemed like people were able to do a lot more with mountain bikes than they were with road bikes in terms of designs and finishes, polishes, use of titanium, anodizations. And all that inspired me. I thought mountain bikes looked very futuristic.”
