Editor’s Notes: Today Nike introduces the Air Zoom UNVRS, the brand’s first shoe built from the ground up with a new FlyEase system for easy entry and exit. Elena Delle Donne of the Washington Mystics is set to debut the sneaker in-game, providing us with an on-foot look at the innovative design.
Nike’s FlyEase footwear is made using insights and inspiration from athletes with disabilities to create better designed shoes for individuals of all abilities. All FlyEase footwear must include at least two out of three design criteria: easy open and close, easy to get in and out of, and adjustability that accommodates different foot shapes and sizes.
Delle Donne looked to her sister who lives with disabilities to help Nike create a high-performance FlyEase basketball shoe. “I wanted to show that a professional athlete can wear it,” she says. “Male, female, adult, people with disabilities — this shoe is going to work.”
The Air Zoom UNVRS incorporates FlyEase technology with a magnetized heel that folds down and connects to the midsole. This allows for quick and convenient on and off, as you can slide the sneaker on and off with no hands. The shoe is then outfitted with an articulated strap that triggers Flywire cables to provide a customized and secure fit. The upper of the Air Zoom UNVRS is made from the same durable Flyknit as the Alphadunk, while Nike Air Zoom cushioning provides quick responsiveness underfoot.
Nike is scheduled to release the Air Zoom UNVRS with FlyEase technology this November.
