Model: React LW WR Mid ISPA
Key Features: The mid-height sneaker features a deconstructed water-resistant bootie atop Nike React 87 tooling. Nike Swoosh branding is located on the medial side of the bootie. A complex lacing system and fastening toggle at the heel complete the look.
Release Date: November 21
Editor’s Notes: As the first part of its new ISPA program, Nike is releasing the impenetrably named React LW WR Mid ISPA this month. ISPA stands for “Improvise, Scavenge, Protect, and Adapt” and is a special project dedicated to creating functional, versatile, and adaptable footwear and apparel that is informed by the built environment.
The built environment means ISPA’s target consumers are “people who are commuting three-to-five miles a day,” according to ISPA footwear designer Shamees Aden.
The React LW WR Mid ISPA features a water-resistant bootie over Nike’s popular React Element 87 tooling, another new silhouette dropped by the Swoosh in 2018.
“It’s the honesty about the method the shoes are made with that makes it fascinating,” says ISPA design innovation lead Darryl Matthews. “The upper is engineered to the exact specifications of an internal waterproof liner that you would commonly find in between the lining and upper of a waterproof ACG hiking boot. We also made sure the pattern heights and method of make were correct in what constitutes as a fully waterproof product. For this shoe, that’s where the element of protect really shines.”
Nathan Jobe, Nike Sportswear senior footwear creative director, adds, “We are able to draw from the best of Nike — all the new innovations like React cushioning and beautiful technical fabrics and materials — to answer for what we saw people were lacking.”
