From the ground up

As Editor-in-Chief at Highsnobiety, Pete Williams has a hand in every aspect of the magazine, including sneaker content. Coming from a skate background, Pete’s a fairly casual sneakerhead, wearing Vans more often than not, but his involvement in the footwear game is deep… perhaps best evidenced by the ever-growing tower of shoe boxes in his office.

As with 2012, the 2013 edition of Highsnobiety’s top sneaker list series is restricted to shoes we actually acquired and wore in 2013. Check out Pete Williams’ top 10 sneakers of 2013 in the gallery above.

10: OTH x Vans x Taka Hayashi Style 36

These were just a perfect summer shoe. All-white, but with a slew of little details that really made them pop. A rare Vans style as well, the homies from OTH killed it with Taka on the assist. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for 2014.

9. Nike Free Inneva Woven Sport Blue

The Inneva was the one that got away for me in 2012. I picked up the blues this summer and my feet couldn’t have been happier.

8. BWGH x Puma R698 “Bluefield”

David Obadia of Brooklyn We Go Hard created a banger of a Puma R698 this year. Pulling inspiration from artist Mark Rothko with a clean, comfy mix of textures and colors, these were a fresh take on an under the radar silo. Congrats David!

7. Maison Martin Margiela x Converse Jack Purcell

Margiela went hard on their Converse collab. With a DGAF attitude, the high-fashion brand dipped some classics in white paint. Very on-brand yet very ballsy. That is to say, these were my must-have Converse of the year. The 1970s Chucks were also a favorite for daily wear in classic black.

6. Air Jordan IV “Fear”

The the all-red “Toros,” were my favourite Jordan IVs of the year. I didn’t end up getting them, but the “Fears” were a close second and I wore them a ton.

5. Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel Lyte III “ECP Miami”

Amongst a slew of other noteworthy KITH releases, Ronnie Fieg did not slow down on his Asics collaborations in 2013. The Gel Lyte V “Volcanos” got people thinking about something other than a Gel Lyte III, and I loved them, but the Miamis were the one I wore most. Ronnie’s “Flamingos” also got plenty of mileage.

4. Sneaker Freaker x Puma Blaze of Glory “Shark Bait”

These were a late addition, dropping literally weeks before the end of the year, but I am pleased to have gotten my hands on a pair and can say these are clearly one of the best shoes of the year.

3. adidas Originals x UNDFTD x BAPE Campus 80s

These were meant to be on my 2012 list, but didn’t hit until 2013. The ZX5000 was incredible, but the black Campus were perfect for everyday wear. BAPE camo and gold logos on a clean, classic silhouette. Salute adidas.

2. Supreme x Vans Sk8-Hi “Power, Corruption & Lies”

The Supreme, Vans pack with the Peter Saville New Order artwork was an amazing release, and the Sk8-Hi were the best of the pack, breaking up the pattern with the black suede panels. On top of that, Sk8-His were my go-to shoe of 2013, with the WTAPS and ICE-T versions also in heavy rotation.

1. Air Jordan I Black/Royal

That OG Nike Air branding on these? No brainer for #1. The only shoe I’ve simply had to have in a long, long time. I gladly paid full retail price for these… and even kept them clean.

Honorable Mention: fragment design x Cole Haan Lunargrand

Not quite a sneaker, these were my go-to for more grown-up situations.
