In the ever evolving world of sneaker customization, we’ve actually seen the medium’s aesthetics adopted and transformed into various types of breathing apparatuses; most recently Gary Lockwood, aka Freehand Profit, who turned a Jordan 3 into a gas mask.

However, the most high-profile reappropriation came in the form of a YEEZY Boost 350 V2 respirator from Chinese designer, Zhijun Wang, who also notably reworked an ACRONYM x NikeLab Air Presto Mid.

Quartz recently released a video profile on Wang which exposes not only the motivation behind the designs, but perhaps more importantly, the air pollution in China which informs the usage after pollution this month forced a decree for people to stay indoors and for flights to be cancelled.
