In celebration of China's Year of the Rooster, Vans has joined forces with Shanghai-based designer Kim Kiroic to present a celebratory collection of footwear. Consisting of six silhouettes under the Vault by Vans and Classic categories, the project draws inspiration from the lifecycle of a rooster and punk rock culture.
While this year's delivery is grounded in classic punk soul, Koroic has in turn chosen to pay homage to individuals who embrace Vans's “Off The Wall” spirit.
First off, the two Authentic Platforms draw reference from punk rock culture and Vans heritage, with an all over checkerboard print, including leather braided upper and creeper height platform sole.
The four Classic Vans silhouettes draw inspiration from the rooster's lifecycle, from an egg to an adult, while the Old Skool is made with nude-colored leather to emulate the rooster's egg color. The aforementioned platform Authentic arrives in all-over yellow flannel with silk laces and is reminiscent of the baby chick.
Additionally, the white leather Slip-On comes with a custom three-color fringe pointing to the rooster’s tail feathers, and to round out the Classic collection, the Mid Skool has a textured faux leather heel counter mimicking the rooster's comb.
Incorporated into the logo design for the project is selection of hand-drawn artwork bye Kiroic, drawing parallels between punk rock and those who carry the “Off the Wall” Spirit.
Vans's 2016 Year of the Rooster capsule will be available initially on December 16, followed by a broader release on December 20.
