If you're a sneakerhead, artist-designer Zhijun Wang needs no introduction: he's the dude who makes air pollution masks from those kicks you've coveted for months. Keen to find out more about the transmogrification process, we headed to Beijing for some one-on-one time with the man himself.
Anyone who's visited Beijing, or "Big Dusty" as it's sometimes known, will testify that some kind of air filter is essential (fall and winter are particularly brutal because of the excessive use of coal). Before turning his attention to masks, Zhijun honed his craft by working closely with the likes of Nike, New Balance and ASICS on various sneaker projects.
Today, Zhijun something of a legend in his home parts, with people far and wide getting in touch for one of his bespoke designs. No sneaker, regardless of how prestigious, is safe from the artist's scalpel, with ACRONYM x Nike Air Prestos, YEEZYs and VaporMaxes all having been butchered for material in the past.
