Editor’s Notes: Following his custom “I Love It” Halloween costume, Takashi Murakami is back with another exclusive piece, this time revealing a unique pair of asymmetrical sneakers made in conjunction with Japanese bag specialists, PORTER.
The renowned artist revealed details of the collab via Instagram, which infuses both his signature artistic elements and PORTER’s fabrics. “In the last few years, I have thought about the reality of the distance between sneaker culture and myself. I felt like it was a game that I would be able to play once I understood the rules; and so I began my sneaker journey, taking action and studying everything I could,” he wrote.
“With that in mind, I would like to share a midway progress report on the direction that I have been working on since spring. Here it is! Thanks to @yoshidakaban.official who has rescued us in numerous ways, from choosing materials to helping with the bag production process, the project has begun to take shape.”
While the name of the silhouette has not been revealed yet, its overall design does evoke a Nike Air Force 1-inspired profile. In addition, Murakami notes that the creation of the model was “overseen by @wakamoon and Kaikai Kiki’s very own design team!” Stay tuned for more updates.
Also, Takashi Murakami’s new solo show is taking over Perrotin Shanghai.
